ABSTRACT
Based on what has been said and written, rural development is central to the survival of the Nigerian State. But there is still an enormous gab between policy formulation and implimentation and between the multidimensional nature of rural development problems and practice of rural development administration. The failure to adopt appropiate strategies that will recognise and use locally available resources and knowledge have been mostly responsible. Thus rural development continues to be a subject that is attracting a lot of controversy. This study exmained the introduction of the integrated rural community based development strategies, the motivation that is required for the people to embark on their own development activities in recognition of locally available resources and knowledge. Community development was seen to be sustainable when it is rooted in the people themselves and derived from their own enironment.
