ABSTRACT
This study was designed to assess the Impact of Community Based Agriculture and Rural Development Project (CBARDP) on the participantsIncome and Output in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to: described the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents; described the basic activities provided by the project and determined the impact of the project on the participants‟ income and output, assess the spillover effects of the project on the non-participating farmers and the constraints encountered by the project participants. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select a sample size of 185 respondents from a sample frame of 1852. A structured questionnaire was used to elicit the primary data. Descriptive statistics, t-test and chow test were utilized for the analyses. The findings revealed that, majority (70%) of the participating farmers were females and (85%) of the non-participating farmers were also females with average age of 41 years and 91% were married, having a household size between 6-10 persons with 32% of thenon-participating farmers having an educational attainment of primary and 27% of the participating farmers attended post secondary school. Ten (10) activities were identified among the participating farmers of the project in the study area. The results from the Chow test analysis revealed that CBARDP had a positive impact on participants income(F=1.98) and output (2.17)at p<0.05 level. The various constraints encountered by the project participants were: inadequate production inputs, inadequate infrastructure, inadequate extension contact, lack of involvement of farmers in planning, poor co-operation among the participants and the period spent for the project implementation was small. It was therefore, concluded that CBARDP had positive impact on the participants income and output in Kaduna State. It was recommended that, the project should be scale out to other non-benefitting Local Government Areas of the State. Participants should be encouraged to form viable co-operative group. Project implementers should adopt the use of community driven development projects (CDD). Finally the ratio between agricultural extension workers to farmers should be balanced by government and non governmental organizations that are unto extension delivery for effective dissemination of information.
