Abstract
This study was undertaken on information sharing among academics in tertiary institutions in Katsina State. Six (6) research questions were raised and enswered, four (4) hypotheses were also formulated and tested at a 0.05. the research questions sought to find out the type of information academics share, their reasons for sharing, pattern of sharing, frequency of sharing, the type of ICTs used for information sharing and effect of sharing information on their teaching, research, self development and community service. Survey research design was adopted for (he study. Proportionate stratified random sampling was used in selecting the sample size of 30% (234) from a population of 780. Questionnaire was used for data collection and data collected from the research questions were analyzed using frequencies count pie chart and histogram, whiile Null hypotheses 1, 2, 3 were tested and analyzed using one way ANOVA. Null hypotheses 4 was analyzed using PPMC. The research discovered among other things that the predominant qualification of the academics is First Degree; that majority of the academic are in the humanities; academics use information for teaching, research, self development and community service through conference, workshops and seminars; academics share information on writing semiar, workshop and conference papers; academics preferred sharing pattern is collaboration in conducting research, joint article publication and co-authorship in book publishing; information sharing keeps them abreast of knowledge in their field, enhances their productivity, more exposure and wider collaboration; academics most frequently used ICTs are computers, E-mail, radio, television, flash drive and blog; the academics differ significantly in the type of information they share and their reasons for sharing; academics do not differ in their pattern of information sharing. The research concludes that ICTs knowledge and application in information sharing is a must for successful academic carrier and to survive in the 21st century and beyond. It is in this regard that the research recommended that, awareness and sensitization forums be formed between and among academics on the importance of information sharing, modern and enough ICT facilities be provided to academics to motivate them appreciate and embrace their usage, more funds should be allocated to academic institutions to enable them respond to the ever changing demands of the information age and for compilance on the latest trends in information sharing.
