INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Educational technology has transformed instructional methods across disciplines, and political science is no exception. In recent years, educators have increasingly adopted digital tools to enhance engagement, facilitate interactive learning, and bridge the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge. In Nigeria, the uptake of educational technology has been uneven, with institutions in Ogun State encountering both opportunities and challenges as they attempt to integrate technology into the curriculum. For political science-a discipline heavily reliant on understanding complex theories, governmental structures, and current affairs-educational technology offers unique tools such as simulations, online resources, and interactive platforms to improve student comprehension and engagement. This study aims to explore how these tools are used within Ogun State's political science departments and assess their effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes.

1.2 Problem Statement

Despite the availability of educational technologies, many Nigerian universities, including those in Ogun State, face challenges in effectively implementing these tools. Problems such as inadequate infrastructure, limited digital literacy among instructors, and insufficient funding have hindered the full integration of technology into political science instruction. Consequently, students often struggle to relate theoretical knowledge to real-world applications, leading to decreased engagement and understanding. This research seeks to identify the specific obstacles and potential benefits of educational technology for political science instruction, aiming to provide insights into effective integration strategies for Ogun State universities.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study's primary objectives include:

  • Assessing the impact of educational technology on student engagement in political science courses.
  • Identifying which educational technologies are most effective in enhancing understanding of complex political science concepts.
  • Exploring the challenges faced by instructors in Ogun State when implementing educational technology in political science instruction.

1.4 Research Questions

This study aims to answer the following research questions:

1. How does educational technology impact student engagement in political science courses in Ogun State?

2. Which specific technologies are perceived to be most effective in enhancing students' understanding of political science?

3. What barriers do instructors face in integrating educational technology into their teaching methods?

1.5 Hypotheses

The study will test the following hypotheses:

  • H1: The use of educational technology significantly enhances student engagement in political science courses.
  • H2: There is a positive relationship between the use of interactive educational tools and students’ comprehension of political science concepts.
  • H3: Instructors in Ogun State face significant infrastructural and pedagogical challenges in adopting educational technology.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This research is significant for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders within the Nigerian educational system. Understanding the role of technology in political science instruction can help shape policy decisions, allocate resources effectively, and support instructors in utilizing digital tools. The study’s findings could also provide a framework for improving educational technology integration in other states and disciplines within Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The scope of this study focuses on political science departments within tertiary institutions in Ogun State, Nigeria. The research encompasses various educational technologies, including Learning Management Systems (LMS), interactive simulations, and digital content resources, examining their usage, benefits, and challenges.
