ABSTRACT
This study is an assessment of the pronunciation problems of English sounds faced by students of junior secondary schools (JSS) in Bauchi State. In a bid to do that, a survey research was conducted in two educational zones of Bauchi State comprising five schools: four for each zone with a total number of (255)students'. Students' production of English sounds was assessed through sound production test (SPT). Also six research questions were raised and answered to determine the pronunciation problems of students. The results of the findings show that mother tongue interferes in the students' pronunciation of English sounds. This concurs with Oluwole (2008), also discovered was the misplacement of stress patterns by the JSS students leading to changing of word category. Among the recommendations made was that the curriculum designers should include enough pronunciation activities such as drills, oral English, minimal pairs etc.
