ABSTRACT
This study was meant to assess the influence of extraversion and openness to new experience on work environment preference among secondary school students in Zaria, Kaduna State. The study used survey design. Quota or proportional sampling techniques was used to select the sample. Five senior secondary schools with a total population of 2,180 and a sample size of 218 students were drawn and used for the study. Two questionnaires were used for the study: Oliver John Personality Inventory (OJPI) and Work Environment Preference Scale (WEPS). Four research hypotheses were stated and tested using Pearson correlation, Independent sample t test and ANOVA at p≤ 0.05 significant level. The result of the analysis revealed that a significant positive influence exists between extraversion and work environment preference among secondary school students. (r = .595, p < .05). Also, a significant positive influence exists between openness to new experience and work environment preference among secondary school students. (r = .620, p < .05). A significant influence exists in work environment preference between male and female secondary school students. (t = 2.428, p < 0.05), and that students aged 14-22 do not significantly differ in their preference to work environment, (F = .983, p = .376). Based on this, it was recommends that the school principals, teachers and the counsellors should help to make students understand the cost and benefits of working in such environment so as to enable the extravert students make informed decision on work environment preference before venturing in to the world of work.
