ABSTRACT
This research outlines the perception of a community centre regarding the impact of implementing universal design principles. To examine how the concept of the universal design principle can add value to the planning and design of a community centre such that it is accessible and can be used by all. The thesis develops a responsive community centre that applies universal design strategies in order to tackle the problem of segregation, isolation or tolerance among users. Literature review and case studies were carried out to evaluate the extent at which universal design principles are implemented in the design of existing community centres and to identify conditions for optimizing participant usability. The results of these studies, published in various resources, were analyzed discretely using different techniques, and were reported using different basis for comparison. The results from the case studies showed that with the right techniques, a community centre can be designed to be accessible and require less physical effort by users. The study concludes with the proposition that proper implementation of universal design principles will generate more income and the flexibility in the design will also enhance fluidity.
