ABSTRACT
Developing Paintings From Yoruba Music By Ajayi Adewale Olusegun Developing paintings from Yoruba Music is an experimental study in painting carried out to develop visual concepts as well as to reveal the level of interelatedness between painting and music. The Juju Music of Chief Ebenezer Obey was used and his songs which are considered educative were employed. Yoruba music contain the songs and instrumentation; and therefore, traditional musical instruments like Talking Drum, Bata, and Thumb Piano were introduced in the compositions. A review of literature was carried out to show the contribution of some artists who have done similar work concerning the relationships between painting and music. A collection of data was done through making studies of the selected musical symbols from music textbooks; and also of musical instruments. A collection was made of selected Obey's recorded pieces of music on audio cassettes. Sketches were created from listening to these pieces of music in pencil and charcoal. These preliminary drawings (i.e the sketches) served as data for the study. The study was categorised into four groups. i. Fussion of symbols and space vii ii. Fussion of symbols, instrument and space iii. Fussion of II with forms iv. Fussion of II with forms developed from the lyrics of the selected son (The Horse the Man and his Son) The works executed in the course of this research are presented as plates. At the end of the research, it was concluded that visual messages is Yoruba Music can be visually interpreted and that oral art could be translated into pictorial art.
