ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to investigate the design and acceptability of clothing designed with sequins and stones on women clothing in North-West Nigeria. Four specific objectives were formulated among which were to determine the effect of sequins and stones on women clothing, assess the rate of acceptability of clothing designed with sequins and stones among women in North-west Nigeria. Four research questions and four null hypotheses were formulated for the study. The population of the study comprised of all female civil servants from the North-west Nigeria, totally 27,092 respondents, while the sample size was 501 selected by proportional sampling of 2% from each state. The instrument for data collection was a designed questionnaire and score card. The data collected were coded into statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) which was used to run frequency table and percentage to analyze the bio-data of the respondents, while mean score was used to answer the research questions. Pearson Product Moment was used in testing null hypotheses one and two and t-test was used in testing hypotheses three and four at 0.05 levels of significance. The findings revealed among others that sequins and stones had effects on women clothing design, with mean score of 2.46 for women clothing designed with sequins and stones with standard deviation of 0.505 against 2.25 and 0.813. The calculated value was greater than the critical value (.219>.195). Significant difference existed in that of acceptability of clothing designed with sequins and stones and those without among women in North-West zone with calculated value of 3.41greater than table value of 1.96. The null hypothesis is therefore rejected. Based on the findings, it was recommended that dress makers should improve on the method of attaching sequins and stones on clothing, so that it would be more durable and long lasting. Schools and colleges should give teachers of clothing refresher courses on any new innovation and fashion, to revive the teachers' interest and competence in craft.
