ABSTRACT
For decades tall and sealed buildings suffer from the effects of wind, some of which affects ventilation and some affects the structural integrity of the building, effects arising from ventilation leads to high energy consumption through the use of machineries to cool down the building, whereas effects leading to structural failure can arise due to aerodynamic form of the building or adverse environmental conditions To respond to this problem, different high rise building forms were modelled and simulated to find the one with higher resistance to wind effects, however Lancet form appeared to be the best among the ones chosen with a drag coefficient of -0.15, pedestrian wind speed of 35.6m/s and wind loading of 247pa. To minimize this effects a special ventilation shaft was designed and attached to the Lancet form and re-simulated again, the result from the simulation proved to be workable and interestingly the waste air leaving the ventilation shaft was recorded to have a speed range of 32 -36m/s, and thus this the range required for the operation of wind turbines which was eventually used as an alternative source of power. To verify the workability of this shaft, a physical detail model was prepared and tested, the result from the model was also positive. Therefore, it was concluded that effects of wind resulting to ventilation problems can be avoided through design, and it is recommended that more researches to be carried out to find out more alternative ways of avoiding this problems. However, effects of wind affecting the structural integrity of the building can be minimized through aerodynamic modification to the building form.
