ABSTRACT
Human activities have resulted in environmental deterioration and depletion of the natural resources which the earth is endowed with,Construction activities play significant roles in this aspect by destroying natural reserves and causing pollution to the environment. The Architect and other professionals in the building industry should ensure that the interaction between man and the environment is friendly .There is a need to maintain the balance of the ecosystem to prevent the extinction of some plants and animal species, eradicate pollution, and provide natural and serene outdoor spaces which are gradually becoming obsolete. The environment is the earth's treasure. This aim of this research is to explore the basic strategies of eco-friendly architecture that can be adopted in the design of a tourist resort at the Lake Chad basin to ensure minimal destruction of the environment.A study of the basic strategies that are applicable to tourist resort was carried out. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Data was collected and analysed by the use of case studies, tables, photographs and visual survey. RESEARCH FINDINGS The study revealed that most tourist resorts do not apply the basic principles of eco-friendly architecture in design. Only few resorts have taken positive steps in exploring eco-friendly architecture in their design The new trend in tourism has now shifted towards nature appreciation, conservation and the promotion of native heritage of the locality. There is therefore the need to apply eco-friendly design strategies in resort design to ensure enrichment and enhancement of the environment. This resort design will serve as a channel through which eco-friendly desgn strategies will be studied and to provide guidelines for any future dcvelopment. This will minimise the encroachment of our natural ecosystem.
