ABSTRACT
This study examined the Effects of Constructivists Art Teaching Strategy on Students? Artistic Performance in Universal Basic Education (UBE) Schools in Abuja Metropolis. Dearth of research effort on the Constructivist teaching strategy on basic art at the junior secondary school level was identified, and research objectives, research questions and basic assumptions were set as a guide by the researcher. Related literature was reviewed to give the study a theoretical framework. And the study being experimental in nature, adopted the quasi-experimental research method whereby pre-test and post-test of experimental and controlled groups were used. Population of the study was selected through disproportionate stratified random sampling technique and sample was 50 students comprising (25 girls and 25 boys) of upper basic class offering Cultural and Creative Arts (JSS 111) from the selected three schools (one private and two public schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council). Instrument used for the study was Art Appreciation Test (AAT) and the test consisted of 20 multiple-choice items, (objective type test questions) administered to the two treatment groups before and after the treatment and scores obtained were analysed by percentages along with mean scores. Findings revealed that students performed better when exposed to Constructivist Art Teaching Strategy, and there was a significant difference between the performances of male and female students when exposed to the Constructivist Art Teaching Strategy. Students in private school performed better than students of public school when exposed to Constructivist Art Teaching Strategy. On the basis of the findings, it was concluded that the Constructivist Art Teaching Strategy was better than the conventional method for teaching art in secondary schools and the study recommended that Government should organize on the-job training, workshop, seminars, symposium, and conferences at intervals for the art teachers in secondary schools to up-date their knowledge on the application of Constructivist Art Teaching Strategy. Public schools should be given more incentives by the Government in assisting the schools by encouraging art teachers in the use of Constructivist Art Teaching method to improve art students? performance.
